Pyramids of Giza, near Cairo, Egypt. These monuments were built between 2600 and 2500 BC, as tombs for the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Each pyramid consists of millions of blocks of limestone, each weighing 2-4 tonnes. The pyramids, over 140 metres in height, were the tallest structures in the world when built. The Great Pyramid (foreground) was built for Pharaoh Cheops (or Khufu) and was the first to be built. Khafre's Pyramid is in the background at right. The third (not seen) is Menkaure's Pyramid.
