The carving of straw animals on thatched roof is a traditional style of folk art in England. It is also a means for artisans to sign off on their work, as well as display their undoubted craftsmanship. This fine example, of two boxing March Hares, was spotted in Sutton Courtenay Village, just south of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Incursions from the 20th Century - in the shape of an analog TV aerial - provide for an arresting contrast.
