The generating station, situated under the platform of thePiazza dArmi station, as shown in Fig. 6, contains a single-phase, 2000-volt alternator built with six poles and operatingat 300 r. p. m., this machine being driven by a three-phasemotor wound for 3600 volts and bolted to a common cast-iron base. The output of the set is approximately 600 small alternator, direct coupled to a Langen & Wolf gasengine, is also operated, and these two machines have up to. Thelength of the cars is approximately 32 ft., the wheel basebeing 13 ft. Each train is stated to accommodate 250, butcontains only 96 seats, a large space, however, being providedon the end platform to which passengers are admitted. Themaximum speed is limited to about 20 miles per hour by theexhibition authorities on account of the light construction of the viaduct, but speeds in the neighborhood of 28 miles perhour have already been attained. The wiring diagram of the train for motive power isshown from Fig. 8, and it should be noted that the systern iseasily controlled from either end of the train. This is ob-tained by dividing the transformer into two parts, one beingin the front carriage and the other in the last. The cu
