When the colony had thus fallen into other hands,the colonists were wholly neglected by the mothercountry even in religious matters. Time and againthey had sought to secure aid from home but in The Gloria Dei Church. Finally when all hope seemed gone they were providen-tially enabled to send a letter to Charles XI., then kingof Sweden. They also asked for Books —12 Bibles, 3Books of Sermons, 42 Books of Devotion, 100 Hymn-Books, 200 Catechisms, and 200 ABC-Books—for all ofwhich .they promised prompt payment. This lettermade a deep impression on the king. He caused copiesof it to be circulated throughout the kingdom, and thereading of it brought tears to many eyes. With the helpof Jesper Svedberg suitable men were secured for themission. These were Andreas Rudman, Eric Bjork, andJonas Auren. At last in 1696 a ship carrying these menand a large supply of books set sail for America. Abrighter day now dawned for the colony.
