Two discharge knobs, P and Q, (Fig. 895), are connected to thecollectors, and on the difference of potential between them risingto a sufficient amount, owing to the accumulation of the oppositecharges, a spark discharge will take place. Most Wimshurst machinesare provided with Leyden jars, R and S, one connected to each. Fig. 897.—The Wimshurst influence machine. collector. Their function is to increase the capacity so that agreater accumulation of charge takes place before the difference ofpotential between P and Q, is sufficient to cause a discharge. Thedischarge will then be much more violent than when only a smallainounl of charge has collected. In Pig. 897 the general appearance of the Wimshurst machine town. It baa six plates, alternate plates being connected togetherBO that adjacent plates rotate in opposite directions. Some makers enclose the machine in an outer case which is tilledwith coal gas as it is thoughl thai the machine then works moreefficiently than in air. Influence machines are sometimes used for working X-ray tubes, ^xxiv EXERCISES 963 out they are not so convenient or reliable as the induction coil,[here are several other forms of influence machine, but thoselescribed above will serve as types.
