Built in 1969 and named after the first manned mission to the moon in the same year, the Apollo Pavilion (also known as the Pasmore Pavilion) is an iconic example of 1960s public art. Designed by the artist Victor Pasmore, the pinnacle of his work as consulting director of urban design with Peterlee Development Corporation. But quite quickly it became a local hangout for local youths and was subject to graffiti and vandalism. Followed by a campaign by local residents to have it demolished. In 1982, the stairs and access were removed and the structure continued to deteriorate. In 2003, Jane and Louise Wilson made a widely acclaimed film and exhibition there, filming the kids playing which helped to bring it back into public awareness. The Pavilion received a Heritage Lottery grant and underwent major restoration in 2009 and was listed Grade II in 2011.
