Containing a concise account of every species of living and fossil bird at present known from the continent north of the Mexican and United States boundary, inclusive of Greenland and Lower California, with which are incorporated General ornithology: an outline of the structure and classification of birds; and Field ornithology, a manual of collecting, preparing, and preserving birds . ates with almostevery character or set of characters selected for use in classification. But Garrods admirableanatomical investigations show that the Psittaci may be ranged in two series, according to the PSITTACI: PARROTS. 495 charactors atfonlod the carotid artories and auibieuss ninscle. I. Pal^eorxithid^ : Carotidstwo (cx(q)t ill Vacaina), tlu- kft uonual, and no aiiibiciis. II. PsittaiID^ : Carotids two,the left superficial, the ainlneiis present in one series of genera, absent in others. In the sub-family (1) Pahconiifhiria, there is no further deviation; in (2) Cacatuincc, besides the lack ofa right carotid in Cucatua itself, the orbital ring is completely ossified, and develops a bonyprocess bridging in the temporal fossa; in (3) Stringopmcp, which includes the curious flightlessground Parrot or ovpl Parrot of New Zealand (Slriufjops hahroptilns), the furculum and sternalkeel are deficient or defective. Psittucidcp include (4) the Arina>, in which the ambiens muscle (/r. Fig. 347. There are thus 7 su])fiimilies of 2 families of Psittaci. Parrots abound in all tropical countries, but, except in Australia and New Zealand, rarely extend into the temperate zone. The Indian and Ethiopian regions are poor in parrots, while the Australian is the richest, containing many genera and even whole
