Gathright Dam on the Jackson River, near Covington, Va., is an earthen dam used for flood damage reduction for communities downstream along the Jackson and James rivers. The dam also allows the Army Corps of Engineers to mix water from various depths of Lake Moomaw to maintain a constant water temperature and flow downstream to help wildlife.
