Col., assignor to the SauvageiMiplex Air Brake Company, of same The invention is specially intended foruse on freight cars, its object being toregulate the braking force applied to thewheels of the car, so that said force shallbe properly proportionate to the weightof the loaded car. In the Westinghouse air brake systemprovision is made for using a brakingforce equal to 70 per cent, of the weightof the empty freight car; but when thecar is loaded no automatic provision ismade or can be made by the appliancesin use for an extra braking force. Theobject of the invention is to overcomethis difficulty, and the improvements em-body means whereby when the car isloaded the extra weight on the spring-supported car body depresses the lattersufficiently to open a valve, whereby com-munication is effected between the trainbrake pipe and a pipe leading to the triplevalve of an extra auxiliary reservoir andbrake cylinder, the push rod of the brake. cylinder being connected with the brakelever in such a manner that an extrabraking force proportionate to the in-< leased weight given by the load may beapplied to the wheels. When, however, the load is removed and the car is empty, the said valve is automatically closed, thus cutting off the extra brake mechan-ism from use, whereby only ordinarylirake mechanism adai)ted for the emiitv Draft-Gear for Railway Roll-ing-Stock Xo. 07^. The special improvement recited here-in relates to a new and improved draftg( ar as applied to a tank car or its equiv-alent and which may be advantageouslyiiiipluycd in other relations.
