Sun map, artwork published in Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica (1696), an encyclopedia of science by the German monk and author Johann Zahn (1641-1707). The text is in Latin, with the header at top stating that this artwork is based on the 1635 observations made by the German scholars Athanasius Kircher (circa 1601-1680) and Christoph Scheiner (1573-1650). Both were early observers of sunspots, which are shown here. At upper right and left is a phoenix, while at lower right is a sunflower.
