Inflated with a light gas (usually helium), the weather balloon rises in the atmosphere at an average speed of 5 m/s. As it rises, the balloon accumulates measurements and transmits them by radio to the weather station. When the balloon has reached an altitude of some 30 kilometers, the low air pressure causes it to burst. A small parachute deploys to slow the fall of the radiosonde.
