The church’s double bellcote was added in the 1200s.


Little Coxwell, Oxfordshire, England: view from south of church of St Mary the Virgin, a Chapel of Ease built in the 1100s by the Monks of Beaulieu Abbey. A Chapel of Ease was a church built to accommodate those living at a distance form the Parish Church. This image includes the south porch, the south side of the nave, surmounted by a 1200s gabled double bellcote, and the chancel. The south porch was added in the 1400s. To the right or east of the porch is a 1400s Perpendicular Gothic square-headed, three-light nave window with an label or dripstone ending in sculpted male head stops; one of the heads has been described as wearing a “sugar bag hat”. Further to the right is a round-headed Norman / Romanesque priest’s doorway with Gothic windows on either side: a 1300s window to the right of the doorway; and a 1400s window to the left. Little Coxwell is a picturesque small village in the Vale of the White Horse in south Oxfordshire. The village was originally part of Royal Berkshire but came within Oxfordshire in 1974 when county boundaries were withdrawn. The nearest market town is Faringdon, 2 miles away, which lies on the old coaching road between London and the West Country.
