FromStaines we made our way south by Chertsey toCobham, the latter portion of our road beingthrough more fragrant pines; thence we drovedown the charming Vale of Mickleham to Dorking, and from Dorking, through a country of commonsand woods, we made our way to Horsham, afterwhich we struck upon a delectable region of greenmeadows and shady woods which brought us toWest Grinstead, where we observed a large modernmonastery set on a hill, though we saw no monksabout; perhaps they were at their devotions. Thenrunning inland to the north of the Downs, wefollowed along a lovely and, in parts, a lonely roadto Lewes, and so home to Eastbourne, where wearrived with the evening star—and our journeywas but a memory, yet how delightful was thatmemory!.
