Not far from this town there is a hill near thenorthern bank of the Temd, famous for produc-ing the bed pit-coal, and veins of iron, and up-on it are fome remains ot an ancient camp. F-)ales-Ov/en is a town feaLed in a fmall dvf-trldl belonging to this county, but_ is en-tirely furrounded bv Staffordfhire. It is a prettyneat place, that has a market on Mondays, andtwo fairs, held on the Mondaly after Eafter Mon-day, for horfes and toys; and on the 27th of June,for horfes, horned cattle and fheep. Here wasformerly an abbey, of the Fremonftratenfian or-der, founded by Peter de Rupibus, bifnop ofWincheikr, who had the manor and advowfcaof the church of Hales given him by king John^for that purpofe ; the effate v/as confirmed to themonks by king Henry the Third. It received af-rter this, many additional benefactions
