Thailand: Thailand: Chatichai Choonhavan (5 April 1920 - 6 May1998), Prime Minister of Thailand (1988-1991), c. 1988. General Chatichai Choonhavan was the Prime Minister from 1988 to 1991. He was of Thai-Chinese descent, and served as Thailand's Foreign Minister from 1975-1976. He became the chairman of the Thai Nation Party, which won the 1988 election to make him the first democratically elected head of government in Thailand after 12 years of dictators and 'semi-democracy'. His government was blatantly corrupt however, dubbed the 'buffet cabinet', and he was overthrown by a coup in 1991.
