Wednesday, October 17th. We are employed intaking deep-water temperatures. It is a doubtfulpleasure at this time of year. Sometimes the water-lifter orets coated with ice, so that it will not closeclown below in the water, and has, therefore, to hang forever so long each time; and sometimes it freezes tightduring the observation after it is brought up, so that thewater will not run out of it into the sample bottles, notto mention all the bother there is getting the apparatusready to lower. We are lucky if we do not require totake the whole thing into the galley every time to thawit. It is slow work; the temperatures have sometimesto be read by lantern light. The water samples are notso reliable, because they freeze in the lifter. But thething can be done, and we must just go on doing same easterly wind is blowing, and we are driftingonward. SECOND AUTUMN IN THE ICE 5^1 Thursday, October i8th, I continue taking the tem-peratures of the water, rather a cool amusement with thethermometer down to --29° C. (° Fahr. below zero)and a wind blowing. Your fingers are apt to get a littlestiff and numb w^hen you have to manipulate the wet orice-covered metal screws with bare hands and have toread off the thermometer with a magnifying-glass inorder to insure accuracy to the hundredth part of a de-gree, and then to bottle the samples of water, which youhave to keep close against your breast, to prevent thewater from freezinsf. It is a nice business ! There was a lovely aurora borealis at 8 oclock thisevening. It wound itself like a fiery serpent in a doublecoil across the sky.
