The statue of their leader Massasoit (1581-1661). Wampanoag tribe was also known as the Pokanokets. The statue was sculptured by Cyrus Edwin Dallin. It was meant to mark the native American leader welcoming pilgrims landing on the first Thankgiving day at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Since 1970, the statue has been the site of the National Day of Mourning for the Native American protest on Thanksgiving Day.
