In November, of the same year, he re-ceived a gratuity for the way in whichhe had compiled the Library Catalogue,and, at the same time, a promise of anincrease of salary, but the prospectswere not alluring enough. After twoyears service John Fairfax resigned,and was succeeded in March, 1S41, byP. J. Elliott.
