Emerson Lake & Palmer's debut album set the tone for much progressive music of the early Seventies. Quickly dubbed a supergroup by the music press and signed to Island Records, their debut album's sleeve design was suitably enigmatic. It featured a painting called Bird by artist Nic Dartnell, at the time working as an 18 year old in Bruce's Record Shop in Edinburgh.
