Contamination of South Platte River with Benzene from Suncor Refinery

Commerce City, Colorado - Orange cones mark wells used to measure the extent of benzene contamination around the Suncor Energy refinery. Cancer-causing benzene is leaking into Sand Creek just above its confluence with the South Platte River at levels as much as 100 times the federal water quality standard. Suncor processes tar sands it receives by pipeline from Canada, as well as locally-produced crude oil.
