Society president FredSchwengel entrusted the suit, with letters testi-fying to its authenticity, to Secretary of the In-terior Stewart Udall on January 23, of a $25,000 gift from the AmericanTrucking Association Foundation, the CapitolHistorical Society acquired the collection fromMrs. J. Marvin Smith of North Carolina. Mrs. Smiths grandfather, Alphonse Donn,was one of Lincolns bodyguards; he receivedthe suit from Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln ninedays after the assassination. In 1903 Donn re-fused showman P. T. Barnums offer of $20,-000 for the apparel.
