Haemagglutinin flu proteins (red), artwork. Haemagglutinin is a membrane (surface) protein for the influenza virus. An example is H1N1 flu virus, where H1 stands for haemagglutinin 1. This protein is the most abundant membrane protein of flu viruses. It is a homotrimer, and works as a membrane fusion protein. Haemagglutinin binds to host cells, allowing the flu virus's genetic material to enter them and replicate.
