Light micrograph of a fatty liver (steatosis) stained with oil red O to show the lipid deposits (red). The most common cause of steatosis is heavy alcohol consumption, which disturbs normal fat metabolism. It can also be caused by toxins, diabetes and pregnancy. Steatosis is reversible by treating the underlying cause. Staining with oil red O is the most accurate method for detecting and quantifying the percentage of steatosis and the fat droplet size. Magnification: x90 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
