Electrotherapy. Historical artwork of 19th-century patients being treated with electrotherapy. A wide variety of electrotherapy treatments were invented following the discovery of electricity in the 18th century, such as franklinisation, faradisation and galvanisation. The treatment shown here involves static electricity. The large Wimhurst machine at right is being driven by a Trouve electric motor. The static electrical charge produced is delivered to the patient (centre) using wires. The treatment here is being carried out by Dr Vigouroux at the Saltpetriere hospital, Paris, France. Artwork from A Travers l'Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900).
