Even under a system of close supervision, however, agood deal depends upon the men who are actually drivingthe Mercurys, according to the transportation the driver is intelligent as well as interested in hisjob, he can facilitate the movement of material to a greatextent; he can readily meet the small difficulties whichmust constantly arise in any such job; and he can act ef-fectively without having to delay proceedings for minorinstructions. Although the pay for the Mercury drivers isnot high, the job offers certain opportunities which appealto some wide-awake young fellows.
