One cannot but feel that General Stone was responsible andto blame; this feeling was entertained by nearly all the command;their confidence in him as a leader was gone, so that had he beenretained in command, demoralization would have been the result. The left wing of the First California Regiment was on detach-ed service and was not at the battle, and those that were left ofthe right wing were sent to join them on the 26th, where theyremained until the evening of the 30th, when they returned andjoined the
