Triassic gypsum . Valley of the Secchia river.


The area of Triassic gypsum stretches for about 10 km along the valley of the Secchia river between the towns of Castelnuovo Monti and Villa Minozzo (Reggio Emilia). It is characterized by the presence of ancient chalk formations dating from the Triassic period (about 200 million years ago) that the river has carved over the centuries, giving rise to the steep sides of the valley with a characteristic white color. The area is the site of Community interest (IT4030009) covering an area of nearly 2000 hectares, of which about a third in the National Park of the Apennines. [1] read more :
