. From the Niger to the Nile. Alexander-Gosling Expedition; Birds. OUR JOURNEY UP THE UBANGUI 223 of trees now and then that hang over the river, there is an un- interrupted view over open, undulating country covered with long grass, A distance of thirty miles, which took two days. OITK STAND-BY to accomplish, brought us to the Roman Catholic Mission of Saint Esprit, where the Padre, Father Moreau, and his three Freres received us most kindly. The Mission, which has been established thirteen years and includes a fine two- storied house of brick, was made entirely by these good men. They take charge of three hundred boys and girls, who are brought up to useful work, such as carpentering, building, and working on the farms, which grow enough maniocs, maze, potatoes and beans to feed the establishment for two- thirds of the year. They also raise live-stock, and we saw one hundred head of cattle, a flock of sheep and a fine lot of pigs, and sixteen ponies which the Brothers had bred them-.
