A young female or hen Almond or English Short-faced Tumbler pigeon depicted at years or 18 months old by the British artist Joseph Williamson Ludlow (1840-1916) for a rare late-19th century volume, 'The Illustrated Book of Pigeons with Standards for Judging', also known as 'Cassell's Pigeon Book', written by Robert Fulton and edited by Lewis Wright. The chromolithograph print scanned at high resolution for this square format detail is one of 50 colour plates provided by Ludlow for the book, which was published in 1876 by Cassell, Petter and Galpin of London, Paris and New York. His art centred on ornithology, with many of his paintings portraying domestic birds, often in realistic natural settings. He illustrated several other books on poultry and pigeons published by Cassell as part of its natural history series. Over nearly 400 pages, the Illustrated Book of Pigeons offered pigeon fanciers a comprehensive guide, in a convenient and relatively compact form, to breeding and raising fancy and ornamental pigeons or rock doves. The book ran through several editions and is still regarded as a useful reference work. However, although auction houses and antiquarian book and print dealers offer individual colour pages, examples of the complete book in good condition, with all the pages intact, are now very rare.
