Flat foot comparison. Artwork showing the different footprints left by a normal foot (left) and a flat foot (right). A flat foot is caused by the arch of the foot not developing during childhood, or collapsing in adulthood. This leaves the whole of the sole of the foot in contact with the ground. Treatment, with arch supports and exercise, are only needed if the foot is painful.
