Necrosis and apoptosis, illustration. Necrosis (left) is the premature death of a cell due to injury or disease. Apoptosis (right) is programmed cell death and is a normal part of the life cycle of a cell. The two pathways shown here progress in stages from a healthy cell at top. Necrosis starts with the cell swelling, followed by the formation of blebs (cell membrane protrusions), followed by the cell membrane rupturing (lysis) to release the cell contents (lower left). In apoptosis, the cell shrinks, blebs form, the cell fragments, and the resulting apoptotic bodies are engulfed by phagocyte cells (lower right).
