He organized theOrdnance Department at that station and fitted with ordnancethe first seaplanes that were ever used in active patrol work off theVirginia Capes. During this time he instructed many of the officersin flying and aerial gunnery who were afterwards sent abroad. During the German submarine activities off the coast, whilestill acting as Ordnance Officer, Lieut. Wetherald patrolled thecoast of Virginia. On Nov. 18, 1918, he was honorably discharged,at Hampton Roads, Va. Married, May 11, 1918, Rosemonde Wyman. [260 ]. * ARNOLD WHITTIER HILL Lieutenant, Royal Air ForceKilled in airplane accident, July 13, 1918Son of Arthur W. and Josephine B. Hill; was born in Maiden,Mass., June 6, 1897. He was educated at the Maiden Grammar andHigh Schools, 1915. From earliest boyhood Lieut. Hill showed thekeenest interest in flying and in flying machines. While in highschool he won a silver cup for special flying at a meet of the Wal-tham Model Aeroplane Club. He made a double somersault andspiralled to the ground, a feat unusual for an amateur . those days. On Jan. 1, 1918, Lieut. Hill volunteered in the Ro;>l Air Forceat Toronto, Can. He trained at Camp Mohawk, Can., and hadtechnical training at the University of Toronto. He learned to flyat Fort Worth, Tex., and was recommended for Instructor in theSchool of Special Flying at Toronto. He was commissioned Lieut,in June, 1918. On July 13, 1918, Lieut.
