Attila and Pope Leo
Attila, the fifth_century leader of the Huns, was known as the Scourge of God. He extorted tribute from the Romans. In 452, he invaded northern Italy, but abandoned his plans to take Rome, so it is said, after Pope Leo I met with him and asked that he not invade the city. The meeting is portrayed here in a 1514 work by the Italian artist Raphael. The two figures above are Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
