RNA-editing enzyme. Computer model showing the rod-like structure of the human enzyme APOBEC-2. APOBEC-2 (APO2) is a type of apolipoprotein B messenger RNA-editing enzyme catalytic (APOBEC) polypeptide (protein). APOBEC enzymes catalyse the breakdown (deamination) of the amino acid cytosine in the RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic code, changing it to uracil. Different APOBEC members use deamination to achieve diverse human biological functions, such as inhibiting the replication of HIV. The function of APOBEC-2 is not fully understood.
