They were used as fog signals on harbor entrance buoys on lightships and some lighthouses. This particular bell called the Bronze Bell was salvaged at the Charleston Harbor entrance channel and minted for the US Lighthouse Service in 1911, according to the sign. The building behind displays a history of lighthouse illumination.
