The Holy Fire ceremony is celebrated by orthodox churches in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem every year before Easter. This spiritual and religious event is one of the most important rituals of the orthodox Christianity, and many pilgrims gather from all around the world to witness it. During the ceremony the Greek Patriarch enters the aediculae where Jesus tomb is located, praying until the holy fire is believed to be lit by the Holy Spirit. The crowds at the church wait outside eagerly to witness the miracle. When the Patriarch steps outside the tomb with the holy fire, extatic calls of joy and awe are heard everywhere, and worshippers start passing the holy fire between themselves by candles. Later the fire is also transferred to representatives of orthodox churches worldwide, carried in airplanes to be used in their local churches.
