NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE


The gonococcus, or neisseria gonorrhoeae, has a special affinity for the genital and urethral mucous membranes. It is usually transmitted by sexual intercourse. It mainly causes acute (hemorrhagic) urethritis in men, and cervical, endometrial and Fallopian tube (salpingitis) infections in women. Gonococci are spherical bacteria (cocci) usually paired, and Gram-negative. SEM x 26,000.
