Wheels and wheeling; an indispensable handbook for cyclists, with over two hundred illustrations . ANTI-VIBRATION DEVICES. 197 adding to the life of the machine and the comfort ofthe rider, besides saving much expense in repair bills, etc. The mud guard is of one piece and is a part ofthe swing frame; it isample and light, and thewhole device gives themachine an exceedinglygraceful appearance, and,we know, will be appreci-ated by the rider. The Peerless patentspring fork works onthe same principle as awatch case spring, or anordinary door can be moresimple. It can readilybe adjusted to suit theweight of any rider, byremoving the handle barand loosening or tighten-ing the compression bolt,as the case may be, andthen securing it with thelock nut. As the springonly compresses one-fourth of an inch it willnever break. The dist-ance between fulcrum andcrown lug, which acts as a stop, is multiplied sixteentimes, and consequently, if the spring works one-fourthof an inch, it springs four inches at the fork Peerless Spring Fork. I98 WHEELS AND WHEELING. In the Sylph the spring truss frame consists offront and rear parts, each carrying a wheel, and anupper part carrying the load. These parts are hingedtogether at the crank axle, and held in the desiredposition by spring braces. The hinge is rigid inevery direction except up and down, so that there isno loss of rigidity as in spring forks, where there is ahinge on each side of the wheel, one of which mayact without the other, allowing the wheel to wabble.
