Bamburgh was the Saxon capital of Bernicia and for a time of the united kingdom of Northumbria. The castle, built on a dolerite crag, has a Norman keep and much of the curtain walling dates from before 1250. However, most of the remainder was rebuilt by Lord Armstrong in the late 19th century. high up hilltop hill top old ancient medieval high walls turret tower people holidaymakers low tide rocky shore
