American homes and gardens . Mrs. Coolidges Bedroom Has a Paneled White Wainscot with Walls of Light Gray 220 AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS October, 1906 broken wall on eachside of the centralsemicircle. The win-dows of the firstfloor all reach to thefloor, but are other-wise similar in de-sign to those thatappear elsewhere inthe house. The beautiful fea-ture of this front isthe portico, whichis placed on theright as one comesfrom the house ontothe sea-terrace. It isa structure of beau-tiful grace and dig-nity, admirablystudied in detail, alounging-room o fimmense attractive-ness, and a buildingcomplete in itself, yet quite obviouslyrelated to the dwell-ing with which it isassociated. And this, notwithstanding thefact that it has anItalian feeling of itsown which differ-entiates this house from any other in this country or else-where. Mr. McKim, who knew this part of the coast well, appreciating the superb views to be obtained from this place,. In the Center of the Water-front is a Great Rounded Bay that Gives a Characteristic Form to the Central Rooms one of the finest siteson the whole NorthShore, endeavoredto build a housewhich would fit intoits surroundings andenable those livingin it to appreciatethe beauties of thenatural surround-ings. His house iseminently successfulin this respect, andthe portico is thechief means e m-ployed to make theeternal advantagesavailable to theowner. Like the otherparts of the house itis thoroughly simpleand direct in itsstyle. It is open ontwo sides, towardthe sea and at thefurther end. Its de-sign consists of acolonnade support-ing a plain, brickfrieze which carriesthe upper the center is around arch, supported by doubled columns, and on eitherside of this are two slabs of white marble let into plain brickborders.
