Sixteen million years ago, a fresh water lake began in a natural basin. feeding rivers and streams, A mass of red, yellow and orange carved pinacles of stone can be seen from the safety of the park's rim road. The Paiute Indians named it the "Unkatimpe-wa-Wince-Pockich", meaning "red rocks standing like men in a bowl-shaped recess"
