Greenwich, London SE10: S vestibule & W steeple of St Alfege Church, named after Anglo-Saxon martyr killed by Danes at Greenwich. Built 1714-18 by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the style of a Classical temple made just cruciform by central projecting vestibules at N & S: enormous Tuscan pilasters support an entablature. Hawskmoor's assistant John James added the 'pepper-pot' tower in 1730. One of 50 London churches built under the New Churches Act of 1711.
