Leningrad, Russia, Rasputin before his assasination, Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was a Russian mystic who influenced Russian Tsar Nicholas II, his wife the Tsaritsa Alexandra, and their only son the Tsarevich Alexei. Often called the "Mad Monk", others considered him a "strannik" (or religious pilgrim) a psychic and faith healer. opinions saw Rasputin variously as a saintly mystic, visionary, healer and prophet others saw him as a debauched religious charlatan. Led by Prince Felix Yusupov they served him cakes and red wine laced with cyanide. Rasputin was unaffected. Yusopov the shot Rasputin through the back with a revolver. Rasputin fell, Yusopov went to make sure he was dead, Rasputin said "you bad boy" and went to strangle him. The other conspirators arrived and fired at him. After being hit three times in the back, Rasputin fell once more. As they neared his body, the party found that, remarkably, he was still alive, struggling to get up. They clubbed him into submission and, after wrapping his body in a sheet, threw him into an icy river of Neva, and he finally met his end there
