The work began in October, 1914, and throughthe labor of large squads of staff modelers and artists was completed byOpening Day. It may be said that the original inspiration of the scheme was to stimu-late the growing interest in good roads, and especially to help the develop-ment of the Lincoln Highway, at that time laid out from ocean to ocean butnot yet entirely complete. The completion of the first transcontinentaltour over it from New York to San Francisco, we have recited in one of thechapters dealing with the events of the Exposition year.
