As his father-in-law was wealthy, Lee, who loved country life, must havebeen tempted to settle down at Arlington to manage the estatethat would one day pass to his wife, but his genuine devotionto his i^rofession prevailed, and he went on building coast de-fenses. In 1834, he was transferred to Washington as first lieu-tenant assisting the chief engineer of the army. He was thusenabled to live at Arlington, but, while in no sense of the terma society man, he also saw something of life at the j^ears later he was sent West to superintend work on theupper JMississijipi. His plans Avere approved and well carried.
