Peridinium sp. (Gr. peridineo to whirl around) freshwater dinoflagellates, stained with calcofluor white to show the thecal plates in blue fluorescence under UV excitation. Under incident fluorescence the thecal plates of dinoflagellates, composed of cellulose, with their closely fitting and specific pattern can be seen very clearly. Microscopic contrast technique : Incident fluorescence, UV excitation. Magnification 580x when printed 10 centimetres wide.
