Antony Hewish (born 1924), British astronomer. Hewish carried out radar research during World War II, then returned to Cambridge to work with Ryle in developing the new science of radio astronomy. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1968. In 1974, he and Ryle shared the Nobel Prize in Physics. Hewish proposed and supported the construction of the radio astronomy project at Cambridge that led to the discovery of pulsars. Hewish was professor of radio astronomy at Cambridge from 1971 to 1989. Photographed in 2007, in the control room of the One Mile Telescope, Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, near Cambridge, UK.
