I believe that winter killing tends to lower the percentage of loose smut, probably the affected plants succumb more roadily to winter injury. The general lowering of the percentage of loose smut in the state v,-ould confirm this as does the following data. In con- nection with hot water treatments in the Shenandoah Valley, v/hich were made m cooperation with tho Cereal Office, samples of treated and untreated grain from each lot were planted at Blacks- burg as a check on the field results. These were in rod rows, six rows to each lot. There was littL.: v/inter killing in the fields in the Shenandoah Valley except in one (No. 2), and about '^Q'^o on the average at Blacksburg. The percentage of loose smut in the untreated wheat from the two stations was as follows:
