Germany, Stolpe an der Peene. Benedictine Order Monastery. Historic Stone Ruin of Stolpe Abbey founded 1153 on the Gutshais Stolpe Estate. The Abbey was founded in 1153 by Ratibor I, Duke of Pomerania, in memory of his brother Wartislaw I who was killed near the site. Wartislaw l had converted the local people to Christianity in the late 1120s. Benedictine monks from Berge Abbey near Magdeburg settled in the abbey and the Pomeranian Dukes and the Counts of Gützkow granted the new foundation extensive lands in the vicinity. The abbey became part of the Cistercian Order in 1304. It was secularized in 1534 during the Protestant Reformation. The Thirty Years' War left the abbey buildings in ruins (1618-48).
