Evolution of birds, illustration

Evolution of birds, illustration. Modern birds, such as the pigeon (bottom centre) evolved from therapod dinosaurs (upper left) that lived during the Jurassic period (around 165-150 million years ago). Primitive feathers were not adapted for flight, instead they probably provided insulation. Archaeopteryx (upper right) is widely thought to be one of the first flying dinosaurs.
